Humans already have, in one sense, created a form of intelligent A.I. Not a very intelligent form, and certainly not a self-replicating form, but a form of intelligence nonetheless. This paper from the Singularity Institute examines in very great detail the benefits and risking of consciously choosing to create an intelligence with greater than human capabilities.
Note: by it's nature this paper is very technical and discusses advanced metaphysical, physiological, and biological concepts.

Fabulous article. Well
Fabulous article. Well detailed and meticulously researched. Very enjoyable to read and ponder. We definitely need to draw more attention to the problem of creating a Friendly A.I. that will choose to remain friendly to us.
