Releasing Control

I wonder if Americans will ever use self-driving cars very much? Most people, and Americans in particular, like to be in control of pretty much everything, their life, their job, and all the aspects of that. I wonder if we will ever be able to release control and let a robot chauffeur us?

Almost everyone knows someone who is a real backseat driver, always nagging and annoying the driver. What are they going to do when the car is driving itself and can't respond to the suggestions? Critique the car's driving, and enjoy it, knowing the car can't respond? Or just stop?

That's funny. A backseat

That's funny. A backseat driver criticizing the driving of a robot car. I can just imagine it, "You should turn left here," "don't drive so fast down this street" Very funny stuff.

On a more serious note, I definitely think that a lot of people will enjoy getting driven around by their cars, it will let them concentrate on other things while in the car without becoming a danger to their environment, and it will let people start to reclaim some of the millions of hours that they spend stuck in traffic on a daily basis going to and from work.

I don't think that American

I don't think that American independence will ever let us allow a machine to be completely responsible for moving us. I may be proved wrong, but that's my opinion.

The Japanese I think will definitely embrace the idea of a robot chauffeur, and the Europeans might as well. One thing that will definitely have to be resolved is the legal implications of such a move.
