Flying robot to fight guerrillas

A flying robot which can identify snipers and bombs in built-up areas is being developed by scientists as a future weapon against guerrilla fighters.

The University of Portsmouth is creating the device with the aim of the project being commissioned by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The US Army recently debuted the first armed unmanned ground system (UGS) in Iraq, marking a new milestone for unmanned systems.

Army Tests Fighting 'Bot

"The U.S. Army will soon test a six-wheeled, 20-foot robot to see whether it can traverse rugged terrain, fire machine guns and carry 1,900 pounds of gear without soldiers remotely controlling its every move," Defense News reports.

Air Superiority Redefined

Once again, the U.S. Air Force is asking the Department of Defense for control over all UAV development. The army, marines and navy oppose this. The U.S. Air Force proposes to get things organized by taking charge of UAV development for all the services. There are a long list of objections to this.
